The last great bullmarket in Australia, pre-covid, ended in 2009. Like the exploration for resources, investment in trading tech is cyclical, meaning that between the GFC and 2019 there was no real incentive to invest in market technology.
Iress Ltd helped the ASX down off the chalkboards in the late 90’s, and until now have had a virtual monopoly in serious ASX trading platforms. They still control the majority of shares that are traded on the ASX through the Iress order router, and almost every platform that connects to the ASX still has to connect to Iress technology in one way or another.
Cloud computing only came to Australia in 2014. The first iphone was only launched in 2007, and it took quite a few years for us to all get onboard!
So there was a virtual monopoly, no reason to invest in new tech, and a huge change in the underlying computer systems. It should be no surprise then that most of the serious trading and data platforms are ok on PC, but not on mobile.
Marketech started designing its new ‘Focus’ platform in 2014. In the cloud, and ‘for’ mobile – as well as PC. The challenge was to connect this latest technology to the ASX, through ageing infrastructure owned by the very company we were competing against!
So we pride ourselves on offering the exact same functionality on mobile as well as PC. All except for multi-screen (for obvious reasons) and multi-chart (as they don’t work very well on a small screen!).
